Fast-paced sports action novels that get kids reading.

Jake and his two best friends play road hockey together and are members of the same league team. But some personal rivalries and interference from Jake's three all-too-supportive grandfathers start to create tension among the players. The kids must resolve their differences and learn to work together again if their team is to win a city championship. Deflection! is a humorous take on the pros of teamwork and the pitfalls of well-intentioned adult intervention.

Reviews

"Swan has taken hockey back to his roots and shown it is still a game that involves whole families while combing fun and passion. I recommend this for young people who aim for excellence in any field."
Sherry Bassin, Managing Partner, Erie Otters and holder of two World Junior Championship Gold Rings
"Interference from a loving family, rivalry between good friends ... are woven into the action of the game. Young readers with a passion for hockey will enjoy this story, but it may hold a particular appeal for boys."

"In Deflection!, Bill Swan captures the excitement, confusion and frustration of being a young person while, at the same time, managing to tell an exhilarating story about a hockey team. ... Refreshingly, Swan writes the story with accessible yet exciting language, and he does it in such a way that the plot is exhilarating."
